Aspect

Pre-Kaddesol verbs express aspect through the tense affixes. Tense affixes also support qualifiers that come between the affix and the verb root to provide a more nuanced expression.

Progressive and Continuous

The progressive aspect indicates that the action began at a point in the present or past and that it continues to occur today. The continuous aspect indicates that a state of being continues to exist today.

Pre-Kaddesol constructs both the progressive and continuous aspects with the relative affix -ḡēt. The progressive is this affix in combination with imperfective tenses while the continuous derives from perfective tenses.

Habitual, Prospective, and Conditional

Pre-Kaddesol computes a number of unusual aspects by combining the imperfective or perfective aspects with the relative affix -kwē and specific moods.

In the indicative mood, -kwē indicates a habitual aspect. When used with imperfective tenses, it suggests a habit that is ongoing and either happening or likely to happen in the present. When used with perfective tenses, it suggests a complete habit that may occur again but hasn’t yet.

In the subjunctive mood, -kwē indicates a prospective aspect. When used with the imperfective tenses, it indicates preparatory action that is currently under way. When used with perfective tenses, it indicates preparatory action that is nearly complete.

In the optative mood, -kwē indicates a conditional aspect. The optative implies action that the speaker would like to occur. With -kwē it suggests that the action will occur if certain spoken or unspoken conditions are met.
